Oscar Pistorius toasting Olympic success with new McLaren supercar
Oscar Pistorius, the athlete charged with the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, had planned to celebrate his Olympic year with a new McLaren supercar, it has emerged.
Pistorius, who has been granted bail while courts in South Africa prepare the murder case against him, is due to take delivery of a McLaren MP4-12C in the coming weeks, according to The Sun newspaper.
Until the death of Steenkamp at his home in Pretroria on Valentine's Day, it would have been a potent PR match: the 26-year-old is one of the fastest Paralympians in history, while the £176,000 McLaren is one of the quickest cars money can buy.
Powered by a 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 developing 616 horsepower, the 12C can sprint from 0-62mph in a medal-winning 3.1 seconds and can pass 204mph if you find a track long enough. And the McLaren, like Pistorius's prosthetic blades, is made largely from carbonfibre.
It is unclear whether Pistorius, who won double gold at London 2012, will go ahead with the purchase of the British-built supercar. He has had to stump up one million rand (£74,000) in bail money, but it is unlikely he can cancel the order at this stage.
Steenkamp, 29, was shot through the bathroom door on 14 February. But Pistorius denies her murder and claims he mistook her for a burglar in the middle of the night.
He now faces a four-month wait before the case reaches court on 4 June. McLaren declined to discuss details of the story. "We never disclose private details of our customers' purchases," a spokesman told MSN Cars.
Here's some of the Twitter reaction to the news of Pistorius's McLaren treat:
