Twin-test: Golf GTI Edition 30 v Renaultsport Megane R26 F1 review

Special edition models are usually the preserve of models coming to the end of their lifespan and in desperate need of a sales kick to get them out of the showrooms to make way for all-new models.

As such they usually entail a few cosmetic enhancements (the dreaded words “go-faster stripes” spring to mind), a bundle of largely unwanted extras and a dubious nickname.

The two cars we have here are rather different however as both companies have something worth shouting about. The Megane is Renault’s celebration of winning the Formula One World Championship for both driver and constructor last year while VW is marking the 30th birthday of the car that created the whole genre, the Mk 1 Golf GTI. Both build on already successful, not to mention powerful, hot hatches but the question is, are these mere “badges and bling” special editions or is there real substance underneath? The UK is Europe’s biggest hot hatch market so any half measures are unlikely to be tolerated by discerning petrolheads.
