Porsche has an enviable reputation for creating fast, exciting sports cars for the relatively wealthy. By far its most iconic model is the Porsche 911, which ever since it first appeared in 1963 has been powered by a rear-mounted flat-six, which was initially air-cooled, then water-cooled from 1998. Porsche's decision to introduce a new entry-level car in 1996, the Boxster, proved a sound one, as it saved the company from bankruptcy.

It's the Porsche Cayenne which has proved a surprise however, as it's a bulky SUV which flies in the face of everything that the company stands for - yet it sells well.
