Daewoo grew out of Korea's first car maker National Motor, which launched in 1937, but it wasn't known as Daewoo until 1982 and it didn't start importing cars to the UK until 1994. Very much a budget brand, the first products included the Daewoo Espero and Nexia, previously GM products.

When Daewoo went bankrupt in 1999, General Motors bought the company and subsequently introduced new budget models such as the Lanos, Nubira and Matiz. Then came a new generation of much better cars, including the Lacetti and Kalos, but the brand's products were badged as Chevrolets from 2005.
