The reason that the 917 was so sleek was that it was designed to race, as were all of the collection, the problem with the endurance machines was that the engine was rebuilt after each and every race, so not for those without deep pockets.
My favourite is the Martini works car which used the set up from 956, hence the 4 wheel drive which was not a normal feature for the 911 at that time.
Unfortunately most of these machines will never see a track again, like with the Drendel family's ownership they will be consigned to an airconned garage and polished as a status symbol. Thank goodness for Goodwood where these sorts of machines are used as they were meant to be used.

The most expensive Porsche in the world has been sold at auction in the US. The 1973 Porsche 917/30 Can-Am Spyder racing car was part of a record-breaking classic car sale held by the Gooding & Company auction house at Amelia Island, Florida.
Just take a look at how sleek this car is way ahead of it's time & beautiful as well I can't help but wish if only, we must all have some dream otherwise Life would be so dull which dull this car is certainly not.

I notice that most of the cars here are race or tuned. Gutted that there isnt a 959 in this auction as i think the 959 was and still is one of the nicest cars ever made.

I am not sure but is this the car that was banned from the racing track, as it was to powerfull.i used to read a 70s mag called speed and power, and i remember a car like this one one being banned as it was to fast . this car could outpce some cars but it is to much weight, compared to todays technology ie the Bereta. i dont think that this car could do the same as what james may did on top gear. he drove the car at a stagering 634km i think he was doing 3 football feilds in a minute. 28/03/2012 11:54
