Vauxhall teases new ‘Cascada’ convertible

Vauxhall has confirmed a new convertible model called the ‘Cascada’ by releasing the most teasing of teaser images imaginable. The latest roofless offering from the British marque is a departure from previous Astra-based cabriolet models.
The new four-seat drop-top is 4.7m in length – in between the Astra and Insignia in terms of size – and as a result is likely to be based on elements from both vehicles’ platforms.

In fact, the Cascada is actually longer than an Audi A5 Cabriolet by more than 70mm. And just like the Audi, the Vauxhall uses a fabric roof instead of a folding hard top – in contrast to the out-going Astra TwinTop, which it effectively replaces.
The new roof can be opened electronically at speeds of up to 30mph.
Inside, the Cascada will use the Astra hatchback’s basic interior layout, although more liberal use of chrome trim and other interior accents has been mooted to give a more ‘premium’ feel.
The engine line-up is likely to come from Vauxhall’s larger Insignia saloon however, reflecting the upmarket aspirations of the car.
Expect the marque’s 195hp 2.0 BiTurbo diesel engine to feature, as well as the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine and 2.8-litre turbocharged V6 motor. Some smaller engines, including lower powered 2.0-litre turbodiesels may also be made available.
Vauxhall has recently confirmed it will be introducing an all-new mid-sized 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine featuring direct injection technology within the next 18 months, so the Cascada could receive this power plant as well.
The Cascada will not be making an appearance at this month’s 2012 Paris Motor Show, however, where the firm’s new city car – the Adam – will take centre stage.
The new car will go on sale early next year, with prices starting from £29,455.
