Vauxhall has announced its crucial new city car will be called Adam and will be revealed in full at the Paris Motor Show in September.

The new Vauxhall Adam will be a three-door compact city car rival to the Fiat 500, Volkswagen Up! and Ford Ka. It will be 3.7 metres long (similar to a MINI Hatch) and seat four people.

The firm says it has chosen Adam because it is universal, short, robust and technical: significantly, it is also the name of Vauxhall sister company Opel’s founder.

The firm this year celebrates 150 years since Adam Opel founded the company in 1862.

Vauxhall/Opel also admits it has broken its usual rule of car names ending in an ‘a’. This is apparently because the Adam itself breaks rules, said the firm in a statement.

The Vauxhall Adam will offer a ‘blank canvass’ approach to customisation from the factory, with Vauxhall promising a broad range of colour, trims, options and other user-chooser details.

Technical details have not yet been revealed, but the Vauxhall Adam is believed to be based on a shortened version of the next Vauxhall Corsa platform, also used in the Chevrolet Aveo.

More details and undisguised images will be released closer to the car’s world debut at Paris in September: expect deliveries to start in early 2013.
