The Porsche 911 driven by Steve McQueen in the film Le Mans and later owned by the movie legend has just sold for $1,375,000 at auction.
Steve McQueen Porsche 911 for sale
This sets a new world record for Porsche 911 prices: in UK money, it equates to £835,000.
The 1970 Porsche 911S features in the 1971 film’s four-minute opening sequence, where McQueen blasts through the French countryside.
It was bought for the film company to star in the movie and McQueen liked it so much, he later had it shipped to his California home.
Remarkably, he then owned it for 35 years, covering over 110,000 miles in the 1970 Porsche 911S. It was only sold in 2005 yet still carries nearly every bill and receipt for work McQueen had carried out.
In becoming the most expensive Porsche 911 sold at auction, Steve McQueen’s old car also became RM Auctions’ 200th $1m motor – and it wasn’t the only seven-figure motor sold, either.
There were no less than 14 £1m cars sold at the headline Monterey, California car auction, including a 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Spezial Roadster that sold for a staggering $9,680,000.
This makes it the most expensive Mercedes ever sold at auction.
In all, 145 cars were sold at the 2011 Monterey event, making it the biggest entry yet for the exclusive Californian car auction.
