Porsche Cayenne to get twin-turbo V8 diesel

Porsche Cayenne to get twin-turbo V8 diesel

Porsche has released details of the latest model to join the Cayenne SUV stable – the Cayenne S Diesel.

The new car uses a 4.2-litre twin-turbocharged diesel V8 producing 382hp and 627lb ft of torque. This will give the large off-roader extremely strong performance for an SUV, completing 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds – 0.1 seconds faster than the new entry-level Porsche Boxster. The S Diesel can reach a top speed of 157mph.

Despite performance to rival most sports cars, the Cayenne S Diesel will officially return 34mpg with CO2 emissions of 218g/km CO2 – making it less polluting than a 911 Carrera S Cabriolet.

A 100-litre fuel tank gives a potential range of over 745 miles, although we wouldn’t like to have to shell out for the fuel bills if you started to explore the performance potential of the blown V8. Expect economy to drop pretty rapidly if – and ultimately when – you do.

The car also gains the German firm’s Porsche Traction Management system, a feature that Porsche say “delivers the dynamic qualities of a rear-wheel drive car, together with its inherent benefits in terms of handling and precision.”

Effectively, it’s a complex computer-controlled programme that shuffles power around to the wheels with the most grip for the best possible performance.

To differentiate it from the standard Cayenne Diesel, the S model receives silver brake calipers, as well as the obligatory S badging.

The S Diesel also gets a strong level of equipment fitted as standard, including dual-zone climate control, all-round parking sensors, cruise control, a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system, electric front seats and 18-inch alloy wheels.

The Cayenne S Diesel goes on sale in the UK in January 2013, priced from £58,243.

The new Porsche will make its public debut at this month’s 2012 Paris Motor Show. MSN Cars will be live at the show bringing you full coverage of the most important concepts and new car reveals, as well as live Twitter updates as the event unfolds.
