The Porsche 918 Spyder, lest we forget, was the absolute jaw-dropping surprise star of the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. Mixing a 500hp race-spec 3.4-litre V8 with two electric motors, it promised a sensational 718hp but just 70g/km CO2.

MSN why are you letting this mindless scum continually post stupid dating sites on here?.....We are sick of seeing them on here and just look how many of them are on this article here. It makes you look stupid given that I and a lot of other people continually report them and you seemingly do nothing. Just remember that you are allowing them to advertise their websites totally free of charge and given that your advertising revenue is falling, do you think that is acceptable?

Back in WW2 Dr Porsche was designing the Porsche Tiger tank prototype which used a conventional engine to drive a pair of electric motors. This eventually formed the basis of the Ferdinand/Elefant tank destroyer. Porsche do have a long history of hybrid propulsion systems.

I am an old bloke now, and I have had a lifetime's interest in cars like any other bloke.
I was expecting to have a Hover Scooter and a Moon Holiday by the time we reached 2000AD, but no luck. Disappointing as this was, here we have an unexpected bit of substantial technical advance, IF it is as efficient as they claim it to be.
Again I say IF.
As a Technical Designer myself it comes as no surprise to me how INEFFICIENT current vehicle technology is, but to get 94MPG from a 770 HP engine is nothing short of astonishing.
I think I will hold off judgement until things get clearer but if these are facts, well done Porsche.

Hybrid propulsion makes sense as one of the alternatives to the status quo. Congratulations to Porsche and others. It already features in many diesel-electric vehicles, from trains to ferries. The ultimate solution will, however, be a sole method of propulsion, whether fuel cell or other.
The suddenly acquired ability of car manufacturers to develop and harness electric power from accumulated energy ('batteries') is probably more of a reflection of impending regulation and shortage of fossil fuel. But, something has to generate THAT electricity. At the moment, largely fossil fuel burning power stations are the wholesalers. The fundamental generation of usable energy from economic and, if possible, renewable sources is key. A few wind farms are not going to do it, but, are we ignoring our friendly local star's vast capacity to donate energy? THIS is the technology that we will ALL need in time.

I would like to see some figures on the electric engines range, i.e. from the batteries and also the weight. Again, when you are dealing with both a petrol engine and electric engines, the mpg figures have to be taken in context and given that the engine here is a race engine, fuel efficiency will not be at the top of its list of attributes. However, given its likely price range, i don't think fuel consumption is going to be a real concern to any would be purchasers. The 700 plus horsepower will be though as we will be looking at around 3 second 0 - 62 times and 0 - 100 in around 7 seconds, but the big question for a car like this is how long the full 700 Plus hp lasts, as in how long does the battery charge last at full tilt....If it only lasts a few miles and then you are on petrol power, then 94mpg is just another over quoted pipe dream. ....Now if they added a gas turbine engine to drive a generator to recharge the batteries, then it really would be a leap forward.

Could be wrong though, will let you all know when my euro lotto numbers come up. If it does 94 mpg watch those middle east lot they will buy the rights to the project.

Hmm, looks like the order was ... take the spare Carrera bodies, stick on a roof and put the new hybrid engine in. Be surprised if it ever gets onto the road, track yes, road no.

hmmm Ferrari at the front and Audi at the back. looks nice but the amount of money the designers get pay'd it would have been nice to see a new shape car not copies off other rival companies. still from the side it still looks kinda like a cerrera gt.

One feature which will, probably, not pass Type Approval, is the high level exhaust exit, even at just 70g/km CO2. Whilst motorcycles frequently feature this, it might just be too radical for would-be passing pedestrians to be considered adequately protected from fumes/heat from a larger vehicle. Just imagine what fun Transit Man would have when blowing clouds of unburnt hydrocarbons (black diesel smoke) around others from high level exhausts when exercising his heavy right foot!
