The boot is a key part of this car so Mercedes has gone all-out to give it a quality load bay to match. Top-notch carpet lines both the floor and the sides (Jaguar also uses the same grade of interior carpet in the load bay of its new XK Sportbrake).
Mercedes has finished it with leather detailing and offers aluminium loading rails as an option.

OMG what were they thinking ! A beautiful car turned into a slice of cheese. Sack the designer or the person who had the idea that perfection needs to be repaired !

Not sure if its just the can with the blacked out rear windows in the images, but it looks like a tricked up, funky hearse to me. In which case, that isn't good.

an engineering masterpiece - / don't know about the rear as it looks a ike a copy of the original Audi 100 Avant ,
I will buy it in about 20 years time / second hand when it will be about £500 ----------------/ ebay or somewhere

Have to admit not a fan. Have had E class before, so much classier than this. Looking like a bit of cheese is a bit harsh but one has to say ""What were they thinking"?

Beautiful car.
The writer doesn't seem to know much about cars though. The blurb below picture 17 is wrong on all three points he mentions!
Mercedes first with a folding hard-top roof. WRONG! Peugeot had one back in the '30's and Ford's Skyliner had one back in the 60's. The Pug could certainly be considered a Roadster as it was a coupe; the Ford was more of 2 door hard top convertible sedan.
Mercedes first with a premium SUV. WRONG! I think Range Rover can lay claim to that at least 2 decades earlier with Vogue (or even Monteverdi) versions.
Mercedes invented the 4 door coupe sector. WRONG! I think Rover's P5B 4 door coupe beat them by several decades!

Looks stylish from the outside, but seeing inside it at Goodwood FOS, it has a fairly pointless amount of rear load capacity due to the swooping lines. An overt example of style over subtance imho.

Just back from the reveal, guys: it isn't half striking in the metal, the CLS Shooting Brake. The long, arching roofline is dramatic and the curvature of the rear (plus the rake of the rear screen) is surprisingly coupe-like. It looks a lot lower than it is - and also looks ve-eeery long. This'll be quite a headturner on the road, through sheer bold presences.
Fascinating to see some old cars outside: not Mercedes this time, but some British greats such as a Reliant Scimitar and Aston Martins DB5 and DB6 Shooting Brake! Why? They helped provide inspiration, said the man himself, Dr. Dieter Zetsche...
