Lexus CT200h down to just 87g/km CO2

Save the planet (and money) with smaller wheels, more wing and a £22k asking price

Lexus has announced revisions to its CT200h hybrid hatchback range – including a new entry-level S model that emits just 87g/km CO2.

That’s a significant on-paper improvement compared to the previous best of 94g/km, and should in theory mean greater fuel economy as well. But you won’t save any cash on road tax, as every version of the littlest Lexus is already exempt.

To achieve this new figure, the base-line S gets a reduction in rim size – and while the new 15-inch alloys may look a bit lost in those bulging arches, the extra amount of tyre sidewall can only be good news for the CT200h’s previously marginal ride quality.

So that’s actually a win. And making up for the weedy wheels, the new model gains a bigger roof spoiler – helping to smooth the airflow around the back of the car to the benefit of those reduced CO2s.

Unfortunately, Lexus hasn’t revealed what that new figure means for the official mile per gallon – although since the 94g/km car already claims 68.9mpg, we could be looking at 70mpg+.

Impressive for a luxury compact with a petrol engine, even if it does have an electric motor as well. What’s more, the £21,995 asking price is nearly £2k less than the previous cheapest CT200h.

Elsewhere in the range, Lexus has rationalised the trim naming structure and added extra items of kit.

SE replaces SE-I, and gets power-folding door mirrors and a softer front armrest; prices start at £23,995. Luxury replaces SE-L, and gains keyless go in addition to the door mirrors and armrest upgrade; prices start at £25,995.

F Sport remains F Sport, but adds an electrically adjusted passenger seat; prices start at £27,995. Finally, SE-L Premier becomes simply Premier, and now includes a DAB digital radio on top of everything else; prices for the range topper start at £30,995.

The revised Lexus CT200h is available to order now, and hits dealerships on 1 November, 2012.
