When did the Auto Union Type A race?
The Auto Union Type A was the first of the Auto Union 'silver arrows' and was built in 1934. The group of Auto Union and Mercedes-Benz grand prix cars that dominated motorsport in the years immediately before the second world war gained their silver arrows nickname (Silberpfeil in German) because of their silver-coloured, exposed metal bodywork.

It's often said that the paint was originally scrubbed off to save weight but the truth of this remains hotly debated. What we know for certain is that the sliver cars looked like nothing else at the time and this only added to the mystique surrounding them.
