Two major errors. For a start It's not a Hot Rod, it's a 'Lead Sled'. Hot Rods are modified cars from the 1940's and prior. Want to know why it's called a 'Lead Sled'?....Wikipedia it.
Secondly it's not a 51 Mercury, it's a 53 Chevy. Good effort though

Could not drive most of them on our [U.K.] roads , due to terrible road surfaces & speed-bumps etc. But there are 100s of vids & photos of this stuff on U- Tube . When we lived at the coast there were lots of custom cars about , but inland you only really see them at shows .

Kudos to these Kids.
These hot rods were the fevered production of American beer, boredom and long winter nights spent isolated by acre-wide yards.
Those innovators let there imagination go wild and armed only with hand tools and little practical knowledge glued the cars together in "interesting" ways that the chicks would notice and define the custom car as their uniquely own.
It must have been great to live at the birth of the hot rod, Small car, Big engine = Hot Rod. Easy.
Having said all that I am surprised how little it has evolved from my early interest in the subject over 50 years ago.
Where are those free thinkers now ?. F1 ?, No. Rallying ?, No. Drag Racing ?, No.
Surprisingly there in infinitely more variation in production car design that in these highly paid professional fields. (They always bleat that the current way is always the best way, and time after evolutionary time always proves them wrong, there WAS a better way.
I think the new Custom Crown must go to the Saxo Class Kids with the obligatory rock concert power level sound systems.
The boy racers may be noisy, but today they 'got the style.

@ mark gill. if you think American roads are better than ours, think again, they have bigger speed bumps and pothloles are horrific, our roads are way better, i lived there for 5 yrs, and replacing tyres and suspension parts is common place daily, and unlike here, you CANNOT sue the state for bad road and damage to your car......... it's tough luck, most of these cars are created for hot rod shows and arrive on a flatbed.
i will never complain about british roads again
