The Ford EcoSport looks set for Europe following a big reveal in Amsterdam.

Ford has confirmed details of a new Fiesta-based compact SUV called the EcoSport at the firm’s ‘Go Further’ event in Amsterdam.

This is the first official indication that the EcoSPort is coming to Europe. The new 2013 Ford Mondeo and facelifted Fiesta were also revealed at the ‘Go Further’ show, which detailed Ford’s future product strategy.

The new Ford crossover was first revealed at the 2012 Delhi Motor Show in India, and is said to combine “small car practicality with the flexibility, spaciousness, agility and style of an SUV”.

The car also features the next evolution of Ford’s design language, sporting a large front grille, slim headlights and chunky surfaces. Meaning it’ all set to go up against the Nissan Juke and Vauxhall Mokka in the compact crossover segment.

The EcoSport will be equipped with Ford’s SYNC in-car connectivity system – allowing the driver to make voice activated phone calls and enabling media playback via Bluetooth.

The technology also has the ability to read aloud text messages and call the emergency services in the event of an accident.

Expect Ford’s 1.0-litre EcoBoost three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine to fitted under the bonnet, in both 100hp and 125hp guise.

This latest high-efficiency petrol engine currently accounts for 30% of all Focus sales, and has also been confirmed for the updated Ford Fiesta and the new Mondeo.

The firm’s larger, more conventional 1.6-litre EcoBoost turbocharged petrol and 1.6 turbodiesel engines are also likely to find their way into the EcoSport when it eventually makes it to market.

The EcoSport will go on sale within the next 18 months. Expect more information on pricing and specification in 2013.
