Ford is to launch a parental control device on the 2012 Fiesta that allows special restrictions to be programmed into the car’s ignition key.
The Ford MyKey system will launch on the UK best-selling Fiesta model range for 2012. It allows limits to be programmed in for maximum speed and in-car audio volume, and enables adjustment of other parameters to make the car more safe and secure to drive.
These limits are associated with a particular car key – so parents can give their children a separate key with the bespoke settings programmed in.
The new system allows the top speed to be capped at 80mph and can prevent the anti-spin ESC stability control from being disabled. Stability control helps significantly lessen loss-of-control incidents which inexperienced drivers are more likely to suffer.
The maximum speed cap can be combined with speed limit warning chimes, that cut in at 45mph, 55mph and 65mph. Ford included this feature because it discovered speeding is the most significant worry for parents of young drivers – 46% rate it as their biggest worry.
Seatbelt use can also be encouraged by altering the seatbelt warning alert so that it does not time-out – and the stereo can also be automatically set to mute if seatbelts are not buckled. Parents can limit the maximum volume of the stereo to 44% of its full range as well, to ensure their children are less distracted on the road.
The Ford MyKey system can even alert the driver of a low fuel level sooner than normal. Most Ford cars flash a warning light when there is 50 miles left in the tank: MyKey alters that to when there is 75 miles’ range remaining.
Other functions associated with optional equipment can also be programmed in: cars fitted with the Lane Departure Warning System can also set it so the driver cannot disable it, for example.
The system has been available in the US since 2009: it is coming here in the light of evidence that shows European drivers aged under 25 are THREE TIMES more likely to be involved in a fatal road accident.
‘MyKey adds a new dimension to auto safety by giving drivers standard technology that encourages safer driving and limits their exposure to risk, regardless of age or experience,’ said Peter Patzelt, Ford system architect for MyKey.
‘In particular, MyKey can give parents peace of mind when they hand the keys over to their kids.’
There is even an added incentive for children too. Ford research shows that over half of those who may consider MyKey would allow their children to use the family car more often if were equipped with the technology.
