This sets a new world record for an American car sold at auction.

The Ford GT40, finished in iconic Gulf livery, was used as a camera car in the film but also raced extensively by team J.W.A/Gulf in 1968 – even taking part in the Le Mans itself.

Famous racing driver Jacky Ickx was among its pilots at the 68 Le Mans event.

Chassis number P/1074 was then sold to Solar Productions in 1970. The film company then used the car to help make the Le Mans film as authentic as possible.

Auctioneers RM Auctions report the car actually sparked a bidding war in the room – and, when the hammer went down, a spontaneous standing ovation erupted.

The Ford GT40 wasn’t the only million pound car at the big money auction, either. A 1955 Ferrari 410 S sold for $8.25 million and a 1938 Horch 853A Special Roadster sold for $5.1 million.

In all, there were seven million-dollar plus sales – and the auction continues over the weekend…
