Ferrari recalls 458 and California

Ferrari has announced a recall for a small number of its 458 Italia and California supercars.

The issue relates to a batch of crankshafts manufactured for the V8 engine; during a routine quality control check Ferrari discovered one of the machines that finishes this part had gone “out of calibration”.

Over time this fault could potentially lead to a vibration that might eventually cause an engine seizure. So as a precaution Ferrari has chosen to recall the affected vehicles and replace the crankshaft completely.

A spokesman for the company was keen to stress that there have been no actual engine failures or otherwise as a result of this issue. The recall has been initiated by Ferrari – rather than as a result of any customer complaint.

To put the problem into perspective, Ferrari has made over 13,000 V8s in the last three and a half years, but only 206 are at any risk due to being fitted with the incorrectly calibrated part.

Of the 206 cars involved, only 16 are in the UK – six 458 Italias and 10 Californias. Ferrari is writing to the owners asking them to contact their nearest service centre in order to have the defective part replaced.
