Evoque and 911 win World Car Awards

Evoque and 911 win World Car Awards

The Range Rover Evoque has come out victorious in the 2012 World Car Design of the Year awards. The stunning British design knocked out such eminent contenders as the Citroën DS5, VW Up!, Hyundai Veloster and Porsche’s 911.

Gerry McGovern, the Land Rover Design Director who led the design team said: “We are honoured that the Range Rover Evoque has been named 2012 World Car Design of the Year.”  64 jurors from around the world, including MSN Cars’ own Peter Burgess, judged the merits of the 46 candidates of the award.

The judges liked the fact that Land Rover had so successfully taken the Range Stormer concept car and translated the exciting ideas into a vehicle that very much remained faithful to the original idea.

Voted Car of the Year by MSN readers too, the Evoque’s appeal is proving so popular in every world market that a third shift was recently started at the Halewood plant.

Winner of the World Performance Car award is the new Porsche 911. That may not sound surprising but remember this. It knocked out the McLaren MP4-12C and the Lamborghini Aventadore LP 700-4 in the final ballot, both incredible machines.

And the 911 has come in for some stick for its move to electro-mechanical steering, which removes some of the old-school feel 911 drivers love so much. Yet so good in the basic package, it still beat all-comers.
