Diesel cars ‘more expensive to run’ than petrol

Diesel cars are often MORE expensive to run than petrol cars despite their reputation for fuel efficiency, a new study has revealed.
Which? has discovered that, due to the extra cost of buying a diesel over a petrol, it can take up to 14 years to recoup the extra cash from better fuel efficiency.
New car sales set fuel economy record
Real-world mpg: the biggest fuel economy losers
“Petrol cars often now provide better value for money,” states the consumer association.
The study contradicts many new car buyers’ assumption that they should choose a diesel to save cash. This year, diesel is expected to make up more than half the new car market for the first time – but, reveals the Which? study, many of these buyers will be in for a surprise.
Which? executive director, Richard Lloyd, said: “Fuel price rises have been hitting household budgets hard, so it’s important that consumers know they are getting value for money when they buy a car.
“Diesel cars are known for their fuel efficiency, but with lower pump prices for petrol and a premium price tag for diesel cars, it may make more financial sense for families to go for the petrol version.”
The cars Which? looked at included the BMW 5 Series, Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Astra and Volkswagen Tiguan. While diesel variants of each did indeed provide better fuel efficiency, a price premium of £1,000-£2,000, combined with the extra cost of buying diesel fuel, means “it takes many years before they actually save the average driver money”.
Big improvements to petrol engine efficiency in recent years has also improved their overall value for money.
There was an extra surprise in the study too – Which? also found that petrol cars are generally more reliable than diesels…

If you are planning to keep a car for some time or cover a lot of miles diesel is worth having, if not get a petrol, many of them are very efficient now.
Fuel bill is half what was with petrol car before, but we drive for economy so get the benefit. Car is bigger than last one, but engine is smaller and not petrol. I think we will save but will take us around 4 to 5 years. Being a tight wad and planning to keep the car until concerned over reliability not concerned by this.
My diesel Peugeot was the same price as the slightly higher spec petrol model that I initially thought of buying. Having had a petrol model previously, I chose the diesel to be able to compare fuel economy. It was a good decision as I get an average of 600 miles to a tank of dieselcompared to 400 with the petrol model.
You can save the difference in price by changing spec and then benefit from the fuel saving....simples
40 mpg in a Cadillac, sorry SAAB in drag, is quite good considering it is a heavy car and full of automation. Is there any petrol cars, kitted out like a Cadillac, delivering 40mpg or so? I’m not talking about manufactures claims, because they always lie.
My old, rough round the edges, worse for wear, petrol P reg Fiesta Zetec runs like an angel. It's last service was 3 years ago and on a recent motorway run averaged 56mpg,(and thats with almost 100k on the clock) obviously not hacking it!
With diesel costing 22-23pence more per gallon I'm surprised it's taken Which this long to calculate the math!
One muses that...
UK Governments realised, some time ago, that with their obsessive drive to Eco-ism in every walk of life one could raise extra taxation revenues, and make folks feel happy to pay it, if they linked ecoism to the things are really bad for the environment thereby appeasing the consciences of planet polluters en masse.
But then, when the world was bestrode by long extinct raptors and huge flesh eating flying things,as well as untold gargantuans which swam in the oggin, the infant environmenmt was being formed by the stuff which issued from massive belching plasma vents and huge vocanic eruptions. Not exactly ozone friendly by todays measures.
So, petrol and diesel engine emissions seem quite tame by comparison. (I am NOT advocating that the ICE does not damage the environment (just in case any liberal, left-leaning, hippy-chick tree huggers might want to start in on one)). Just musing...
completely agree,my 17 year 1.8 mondeo does 30m.p.g. round town and 60 on a run.i keep it in top gear above 15 m.p.h. and overdrive above 30 and not changed oil in 5 years.happy motoring ,from dave.
