David Cameron’s Fiat 500 up for sale

An original Fiat 500 L owned by Prime Minister David Cameron is going up for sale with Silverstone Auctions at next month’s Classic Motor Show, held at the Birmingham NEC.

David Cameron bought the diminutive 1971 Fiat 500 L as a surprise birthday present for his wife Samantha, but the couple have only covered around 1,000 miles in the 10 years the PM has owned the car.

But just so you know you’re not getting duped if the lot becomes yours, there’s a signed letter from Mr Cameron on House of Commons headed paper to support his ownership of the vehicle.

The L model – produced between 1968 and 1972, standing for lusso, or luxury in English – was the penultimate iteration of the 500 and differs from the original city car in featuring a “much modernised interior”. That means a renewed dashboard, which brought the car up to date, as well as more comfort.

The vehicle has covered a genuine 13,000 miles from new and is in completely standard trim, having undergone a full restoration 2010. The funky little Fiat still has its original 499cc two-cylinder air-cooled engine and is reported to be in excellent mechanical condition.

The car goes under the gavel on the 17 November and is expected to fetch anywhere between £8,000 and £12,000.

Considering you can buy a new Fiat 500 for similar money, some may think it’s a touch on the pricey side. But we reckon the classic has the edge on cool – and the cost is nothing compared to this old Volkswagen Golf.
