Britain’s longest road works diversion

PA

In what must be the most ridiculous road diversion yet, Somerset Council plan to divert drivers for 47 miles so that they can work on a 680 metre stretch of road.

Local Highbridge residents are bewildered at the plans, which will turn a 30-second drive through Church Street into a 2-hour-long road trip around the local countryside.

The eight days of work, which start on Monday, will inevitably cause serious delays and will be a headache for drivers going through the town.

Phil Harvey, Highbridge town councillor said: "This has to qualify as the UK's longest-ever diversion route caused by such a minor set of roadworks. It is just laughable that Somerset County Council really expects motorists to drive almost 50 miles across the region to avoid a few hundred metres of road."

"There are plenty of shorter, more sensible, local routes to take."

It seems the diversion was put in place for legal and safety reasons, as Eileen Shaw, Highbridge town clerk, explains: "The alternative route might look extreme but it is being put in place by the county council to try and divert motorists, particularly those with heavy goods vehicles, away from minor roads with weak bridges."

A spokesman from Somerset Council defended the decision, adding: "We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused but it is only for a short period and only affects the few."
