BMW will produce a new sports SUV, the X4, as a premium alternative to the BMW X3 – and revealed it is to be heavily influenced by the controversial BMW X6.
The firm’s CEO, Norbert Reithofer, confirmed the BMW X4 is coming to market with an expected launch date of 2014…
… however, our car scoop team here at MSN Cars has been hard at work and has already created an image of how the new BMW X4 may look, based on current knowledge.
This shows the BMW X4 will be, as Reithofer confirmed, of similar design to the BMW X6. BMW calls this the ‘Sports Activity Vehicle’ look, or SAV: the X6 may have proven controversial but it has also been a strong seller since launch in 2008.
BMW is hoping for even greater success with the BMW X4, which will largely be based on the proven (and very able) chassis of the current BMW X3. Reithofer confirmed this by revealing the new BMW X4 will be around 4.65 metres long – the same length as the BMW X3.
Other standout details will be a very sporty rake to the rear end, and pronounced wheelarches that are much more exaggerated than the sober-suited BMW X3.
Engines will include BMW’s renowned performance diesels, but also expect BMW’s efficient 2.0-litre diesel to feature heavily too.
More information on the new BMW X4 will emerge over coming months – insiders admit the project development is now well underway – prior to its launch some time in 2014.
