One of the most coveted cars of 1980s television is up for sale. KITT, the talking Pontiac Trans Am from the hit show Knight Rider, is being sold for £76,000 at a Californian car dealership.

Restored to its former glory, and with only 2,393 original miles on the clock, this KITT was one of only four cars used for close-up interior shots in Knight Rider, which starred David Hasselloff as Michael Knight. It featured in all four series.

Officially called Knight Industries Two Thousand, the car has been on display for a month at Kassabian Motors, Dublin, California, where it has received ‘a great deal of interest’ and has the potential to break its current sale price of $150,000. KITT achieved cult status from young and old fans alike for its ability to speak with its driver, jump obstacles, drive silently, shield bullets and fire rockets. Its fictional performance statistics made for interesting viewing, too: the ‘turbocharged’ V8 engine theoretically enabled KITT to hit 0-60mph in two seconds and a top speed well in excess of 200mph.

However, the car is rather more humble in reality; most of the switches in the cockpit do not do anything, nor will the car jump ravines or talk to you. If it is any consolation, the red scanner light on the nose is real and makes the same humming noise as the car did on screen. The trouble is you will not be able to drive it around and show off to your friends as it does not pass US emissions laws. Instead, the car is expected to go to an enthusiast or museum where it will be used for static displays.

One KITT used in the series was sold on eBay two years ago and went for just over £30,000, while another is currently on display in Keswick, England.
