Fiat’s long promised a proper return of its Abarth badge. So we weren’t too surprised to hear our spy photographers have spotted a new hot hatchback out testing.

We’ve already seen a hot 500 Abarth out and about and now the Grande Punto is pencilled in to get some extra sting with the Scorpion badge, boasting up to 200bhp.

It will feature the usual go-faster styling you’d expect – deeper front and rear spoilers, wider wheel arches filled with bigger wheels and tyres and larger air intakes to cool the more powerful motor. Bigger brakes, improved steering response and firmer suspension will also feature. Inside it will be trimmed with the usual sporting materials; metal, alcantara and leather are all certain to feature. Equipment levels will be high too befitting its range-topping status. Expect it to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, reaching showrooms by early 2007.
