Are baby on board stickers a danger?
Baby on board stickers are used by two in five parents – but new research shows that they have actually helped CAUSE an accident for 1 in 20 of them.
Research amongst 2000 drivers by confused.com has revealed that 5% of drivers say they have been involved in an accident due to stickers such as baby on board stickers obscuring their view out.
Nearly half of those surveyed confirm that baby on board signs obscure their vision while driving – leading road safety charity Brake to suggest they could actually be a danger rather than a lifesaver.
Parents disagree though, according to the survey: 4 in 5 of parents with children under 16 believe they improve safety, by informing the emergency services in an accident that a child is on board.
But even here, there is an issue: 46% of parents also admit they don’t remove it when there are no children on board – making the display of the sign pointless.
Julie Townsend, Deputy Chief Executive at Brake, said: “Baby on board signs can be incredibly helpful for emergency services at the scene of a crash, in knowing whether there’s a child involved.
“But this help can become a hindrance if drivers display signs when their child isn’t in the vehicle.
“Worse still is the danger that can be posed by drivers obscuring their view by cluttering up windows with lots of signs. Drivers’ priority should always be getting there safely, without putting themselves, young passengers or other road users a risk.”
Brake is now inviting motorists to debate whether baby on board signs are indeed a help or a hindrance – and has also issued some top tips on how best to use them and ensure their benefits are fully realised:
* Display a ‘baby on board’ sign (or similar) to aid emergency service officers in case of a crash, but only when there actually is a child present. If you go out in the car without your child, remove the sign
* Do not display more than one sign
* Do not place signs in a way that obscures the driver’s view
