Alfa Romeo reveals new Gloria concept
Alfa Romeo has revealed the Gloria sports saloon concept, a model created by young car designers as a study on what overseas American and Asian markets might like to see from Alfa.
The firm asked the student designers to focus on those markets’ preference for elegance, prestige and space – that’s why it’s 4.7 metres long and over 1.9 metres wide, to create enough front and rear interior room.
Alfa says the Gloria is powered by a V6 or V8 biturbo engine, suggesting the new modular engine seen in the latest Maserati Quattroporte could find its way into the Alfa.
Gorgeous detailing abounds: note the leather straps on the bonnet, which are meant to depict the same such straps used to tether luggage on vintage cars.
Alfa also says the bonnet has been designed to emphasise the brand’s famous ‘shield’ grille through 3D body forming.
“We asked the students in the Master programme to give us their completely independent interpretation of a new Alfa Romeo saloon,” said Lorenzo Ramaciotti, Head of Fiat & Chrysler Design.
“During development, we commented, discussed and guided the projects in order to get the most from their spontaneous expressions of creativity.
“The result was stimulating and marked by professional and creative excellence.”
However, the question we’re asking is does this preview Alfa’s long-overdue 159 replacement, the Alfa Romeo Giulia? This is due for launch, finally, in 2014 and is key to Alfa’s vital product overhaul and expansion into the US.
Firm details on the new car have been scant to date, but we wouldn’t rule out the pretty Gloria subtly hinting at what the forthcoming new model – mooted for launch at the Frankfurt Motor Show 2013 in September – looks like.
Geneva Motor Show 2013 visitors are in for an extra treat too. Thanks to augmented reality technology, they’ll be able to interact with the full-scale model via their smartphone, ‘virtually’ swapping wheels and body colour.
Alfa’s planning a contest so people can vote on their favourite to determine the car’s final configuration.
Come back to MSN Cars next month where we’ll bring you full details from the Geneva Motor Show 2013 – including the inside line on whether this really does hint at the vital new Alfa Romeo Giulia…
