Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the designer of the legendary Porsche 911, died yesterday in Salzburg at the age of 76.

Butzi, as he was nicknamed, was the son of Ferry Porsche and was a member of the Porsche board before handing over to his son, Ferdinand Oliver Porsche, in 2005.

After designing the 911, Ferdinand went on to set up Porsche Design, which offered stylish Porsche memorabilia that included watches and bags.

Matthias Mueller, CEO of Porsche AG, said in a statement: "We mourn the death of Ferdinand Alexander Porsche. As creator of the Porsche 911 he founded a design company in our culture that shapes our sports cars today. His philosophy of good design is for us a legacy that we will continue to do with honour."

The Porsche 911 is one of the world's best-selling sportscars and still looks familiar to Ferdinand's original design from nearly 50 years ago.
