2013 UK new car sales forecast revised upwards
New car registrations grew 12.7 per cent in July 2013 to 162,228 units – the 17th successive monthly rise which has led trade organisation the SMMT to revise its full year sales target.
The trade body now predicts a full-year sales total of 2.216 million cars, 8.4 per cent up on 2012.
Unlike previous months, where retail customers drove sales growth, July 2013 saw buyers across the board register more cars. Private, fleet and business all helped push sales over the 160,000 mark for the month.
“Strong business and consumer confidence in July saw the new car market continue to rise, posting double-digit growth in the month,” said Mike Baunton, SMMT Interim Chief Executive.
“Now we have evidence of consistent growth, we have raised our forecast for 2013 new car registrations to 2.216 million units, an increase of over 8% on last year.”
The revised target compares to a forecast of 2.057 million units at the start of the year, demonstrating how the new car market has continued to pick up in recent months – in contrast to weaknesses in other key European markets.
“Recently, we’ve seen a range of economic indicators point to improving conditions and our raised sales forecast emphasises how positively we view the rest of 2013,” said Baunton.
The Ford Fiesta once again retained the top spot in the UK best sellers chart – with registrations a full 25 per cent ahead of the next-best Ford Focus.
The British-built Vauxhall Astra was in the top three best-sellers, with the Sunderland-built Nissan Qashqai and Juke also appearing in the top 10.
The news for Vauxhall wasn’t entirely positive though, with the Corsa supermini plummeting down to fifth place in the sales charts, behind the new Volkswagen Golf. The firm desperately awaits a facelift for the ageing supermini…
