New GT6 game launch reveals a whole host of amazing new cars to drive – including futuristic concepts and unusual classics
2013 Motor Show Calendar
It’s January 2013, and what better way to celebrate the start of a new year than with a quick round up of all the important motor shows and motoring events taking place over the next 12 months.
Here we’ve selected 15 of our favourites from the 2013 UK motor show calendar, and added 15 more from around the world, just for good measure.
This isn’t an exhaustive list – not least because some popular events such as Top Gear Live haven’t announced when they’re taking place yet, while others, such as the Goodwood Breakfast Club are too numerous to list – but if there’s anything else you feel is worth a mention let us know.
15 TOP UK MOTORING EVENTS FOR 2013
Here are 15 top motoring events taking place in the UK in 2013 – with many more, including Top Gear Live and Aston Martin’s 100th anniversary celebrations, still to be confirmed.
AUTOSPORT INTERNATIONAL 10-13 JANUARY 2013
Autosport International is primarily a motorsport show, but for several years now it’s had a live action element and a substantial supercars exhibition. A great way to start the year.
RACE RETRO 22-24 FEBRUARY 2013
From up to the minute racing cars to those of the classic variety – Race Retro in Coventry has got the latter very well covered. It’s a compact event but with plenty to see, and to buy…
SANTA POD FESTIVAL OF POWER 30 MARCH-1 APRIL 2013
Formerly known as the Easter Thunderball, the Santa Pod Festival of Power features European-level drag racing “funny cars” and much more. Pack the earplugs, and enjoy.
GAYDON SPRING CLASSIC AND CREAM TEA RUN 12 MAY 2013
The Heritage Motor Centre at Gaydon holds all kinds of events all through the year, but one that grabbed our eye is the Classic and Cream Tea run that takes place in May; there’s usually another later in the year if Spring’s too cold for you.
MOTORSPORT AT THE PALACE 26-27 MAY 2013
That’s Crystal Palace – rather than the Queen’s digs – where the Sevenoaks and District Motor Club holds a sprint competition every year. It’s London’s biggest motorsport event. At least until someone manages to arrange a Grand Prix.
CHOLMONDELEY PAGEANT OF POWER 14-16 JUNE 2013
Cholmondeley Pageant of Power is most easily described as the Goodwood of the north, but in reality it’s much more than that. In addition to the cars there are powerboat races, helicopter displays and demonstrations of British military might. Well worth the trip.
BEAULIEU CUSTOM AND HOT ROD FESTIVAL 16 JUNE 2013
Like Gaydon, the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu holds motoring events all though the year – we’ve another coming up in just a moment – but one of the biggest is the custom car and hot rod festival that takes place in May, which always has a massive turn out.
FORMULA 1 BRITISH GRAND PRIX AT SILVERSTONE 28-30 JUNE 2013
The highlight of the British motorsport calendar is the Grand Prix at Silverstone. Or at least it is if it doesn’t rain – at which point the parking and the surrounding road network usually get swamped in chaos. Like last year. Doesn’t seem to put the punters off, though, as there was record attendance in 2012.
GOODWOOD MOVING MOTOR SHOW AND FESTIVAL OF SPEED 4-7 JULY 2013
The Goodwood Moving Motor Show has quickly established itself as a fixture on the international motor show calendar. But then, it comes the day before the sublime Goodwood Festival of Speed, which needs no introduction here. Put them both in your diary now.
SILVERSTONE CLASSIC 26-28 JULY 2013
Not content with holding the British GP, Silverstone also hosts an enormous classic motorsport event the following month. It’s like the Goodwood Revival, only slightly less crowded…
SALON PRIVE 4-6 SEPTEMBER 2013
Salon Prive is a concours event, which means plenty of expensive metal, overlooked by expensive people, and the inevitability of an expensive entry price. This does tend to include a lobster lunch and champagne, though, so that doesn’t mean it’s poor value.
FIA EUROPEAN DRAG RACING FINALS SANTA POD 5-8 SEPTEMBER 2013
Santa Pod traditionally hosts the FIA European Drag Racing Finals in September – your chance to see the fastest dragsters in Europe. At the very least a one-time must for speed freaks and car enthusiasts everywhere.
BEAULIEU INTERNATIONAL AUTOJUMBLE 7-8 SEPTEMBER 2013
Need an elusive part for a classic, or perhaps a piece of motoring memorabilia? Then get yourself down to the Beaulieu International Autojumble, where you’ll find stalls absolutely packed with all manner of exciting car-related stuff. Beaulieu also holds an Autojumble in the spring (18-19 May 2013).
GOODWOOD REVIVAL 13-15 SEPTEMBER 2013
Yes, a separate entry for the Goodwood Revival, which has done more for classic motorsport than any other event in the last decade. Door handle to door handle racing is assured – good luck trying not to wince when £million Ferraris start swapping paint.
CHELSEA AUTOLEGENDS TBC SEPTEMBER 2013
Our final UK spot goes to the Chelsea AutoLegends event, which takes place in the Royal Hospital Gardens, Chelsea. The dates haven’t been confirmed for 2013 just yet, but we do know it’s pencilled in for September. With the support of Sir Stirling Moss, Derek Bell and Richard Attwood, it always offers a strong line-up.
15 TOP INTERNATIONAL MOTORING EVENTS FOR 2013
For those of you with the means and motivation to venture further afield, we’ve also put together a quick list of 15 of the top international motor shows and motoring events taking place in 2013.
As with the UK list, be sure to let us know if we’ve missed out your favourite.
NORTH AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW 14-27 JANUARY 2013
Taking place in Detroit every January, the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) is – as the name suggests – the USA’s premier motor show. Heavy on production debuts usually.
DAYTONA 24 HOURS 26-27 JANUARY 2013
American sports prototype racing at its finest, the Daytona 24 hours – or Rolex 24 at Daytona as it’s also known – has long been recognised for its brilliant atmosphere, great access and close racing. One for the bucket list.
RETROMOBILE 6-10 FEBRUARY 2013
Retromobile is a massive vintage and classic car show held in Paris every year. Held at the same exhibition centre as the biennial Paris Motor Show, it’s a relatively short hop from the channel, making it ideal for an enthusiast’s road trip.
DAYTONA 500 24 FEBRUARY 2013
The Daytona 500 is the biggest race in NASCAR, making it the perfect opportunity to get up close and personal with this most American of motor sports. Expect beer, great big camper vans, plenty of crashes and more beer.
GENEVA INTERNATIONAL MOTOR SHOW 7-17 MARCH 2013
Is Geneva the greatest Motor Show in the world? Bringing the very best of the global automotive industry together into a relatively compact space, it’s easy to get round, easy to get to, and always has plenty of spectacular debuts.
SHANGHAI INTERNATIONAL MOTOR SHOW 21-29 APRIL 2013
You only have to spend two minutes with any car company executive these days to find out just how important China is to the world car market. Shanghai shares top motor show billing there with Beijing; like Frankfurt and Paris they happen alternate years.
INDIANAPOLIS 500 15-26 MAY 2013
The Indy 500 is one of motorsport’s crown jewels – up there with the Monaco Grand Prix and the Le Mans 24 Hours. With 33 single-seater racing cars fighting it out around the famous “Brickyard” oval for 500 miles, it’s tough and spectacular – and British drivers have a habit of doing very well.
NÜRBURGRING 24 HOURS 17-20 MAY 2013
Held at a 15.5-mile circuit that’s part modern F1 track and part B-road on steroids, the Nürburgring 24 Hours is arguably the toughest endurance race of them all. An eclectic collection of cars and a festival party vibe make for a magical up-all-night event.
FORMULA 1 MONACO GRAND PRIX AT MONTE-CARLO 23-26 MAY 2013
The Monaco Grand Prix is the most glamorous round of the most glamorous motorsport. Easy to reach from the UK, too. We’d also recommend the Belgium Grand Prix at Spa Francorchamps (23-25 August 2013) as a lifetime must see.
LE MANS 24 HOURS 16-23 JUNE 2013
In addition to being an annual pilgrimage for many a British car enthusiast – as the French police are well aware – Le Mans is also increasingly a hotbed for technological innovation, as the Nissan DeltaWing proved last year. Great fun, too.
BONNEVILLE SPEED WEEK 10-16 AUGUST 2013
Bonneville Speed Week is all about going as fast as possible in a straight line over the Utah Salt Flats. Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (30 June 2013) is a similarly American undertaking, only with corners.
PEBBLE BEACH CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE 14-18 AUGUST 2013
Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is the show the UK’s Salon Privé wants to be when it grows up. Rich people and extremely expensive cars – mostly classics (on both counts) but with the odd modern debutant as well.
FRANKFURT INTERNATIONAL MOTOR SHOW 14-22 SEPTEMBER 2013
If Geneva’s the greatest Motor Show, Frankfurt is quite possibly the biggest. A serious industry shindig, you can also look forward to the inevitable excess of the German big-three attempting to out-do each other on home turf. Bring comfy shoes…
SEMA SHOW 5-8 NOVEMBER 2013
The SEMA Show takes place in Las Vegas – which tells you almost everything you need to know. It’s dedicated to the American custom car industry, and is as wild and as wacky as you can possibly imagine.
TOKYO INTERNATIONAL MOTOR SHOW 22 NOVEMBER-1 DECEMBER 2013
The Tokyo International Motor Show returns this year, and in stereotypical Japanese fashion anyone who makes the trip can expect some crazy concept cars and plenty of hi-tech innovation. Let’s hope it doesn’t all get lost in translation…
