186hp Hyundai Veloster Turbo for £21,995

Hyundai has announced the pricing and performance details for its new Veloster Turbo SE – a 186hp version of the firm’s curiously-doored coupé.
With a twin-scroll turbo adding the extra oomph to the 1.6-litre T-GDI direct injection petrol engine, the Veloster Turbo SE will hit 62mph in 8.4 seconds and 133mph at the wall.

A nice flat torque curve sees the full 195lb ft available all the way from 1,500rpm to 4,500rpm – which should ensure a good slug of response for overtaking. Firmer suspension is said to spruce up the handling, and a six-speed manual gearbox helps you establish command.
Keeping your conscience clear, the turbo tweakery only sets the CO2 emissions back 9g/km from standard to 157g/km overall, while claimed fuel economy is 40.9mpg, compared to 43.5mpg for the regular car.
Of course, all of this is irrelevant if you can’t quite see the point of the Veloster’s “2+1” door design – which is, we’d have to admit, a little bit odd. Still, having one door on the driver’s side and two doors on the passenger side certainly helps the little Hyundai stand out from the crowd.
Before you ask, we aren’t entirely sure why it’s called the “Turbo SE” either. SE traditionally stands for either Special Edition or Special Equipment; as far as we know it’s a full production model, so it can’t be the former – but does the latter make more sense?
Well, Hyundai has definitely crammed in the kit. There are 18-inch alloys with chrome inserts and the body work is tougher all round – including a different bumpers, new side skirts and bigger boot spoiler.
On the inside you get new leather seats, sat-nav on a seven-inch touch screen, reversing camera and an upgraded eight-speaker stereo system. Plus there’s the usual Hyundai Five-Year Triple Care Warranty.
MSN Cars will be finding out if it’s actually any good next month when we get behind the wheel for the first time.
The Hyundai Veloster Turbo SE arrives in dealers 24 September this year, and will be priced from a very reasonable sounding £21,995.
