In France taxis were used to take troops to the front in World War I, but in London their numbers slumped by more than half when petrol shortages gave the horse a brief advantage. Fortunately in 1966 the advent of the more economical diesel cab meant that by 1996 a mere 17 cabbies were filling up with unleaded.
