The taximeter was invented in 1891 by Wilhelm Bruhn, and gives the cab its familiar name. Introduced to London in 1907, it indicated the distance travelled in order to prevent rows with the driver about the size of the fare. Interestingly the Germans are still keen to invade London, VW and Mercedes being among the companies which have designed cabs with the capital in mind.
