Horse-drawn cabs survived for years because of police reluctance to license new technology. Gottlieb Daimler invented the internal combustion engine in 1883, and built a petrol-powered cab soon afterwards, but it was 1904 before the Met. ageed to allow such new-fangled contraptions onto the streets.
