Yeah, baby, yeah - it's finally here, this is the brand new, production ready Jaguar F-Type. And isn't it gorgeous? Set to occupy that fecund middle ground between the Boxster and the 911, this is Jaguar looking to take repossession of the exciting sports car market.

What is it?
The Jaguar F-Type is a classic front-engined, rear-wheel drive sports car. First seen this time last year at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, when it was shown as a coupé called the C-X16 concept. It was obvious then that the big cat just had to build it. It debuts in Paris in convertible Roadster form.

What's hot?
Beyond the smoking hot exterior looks, Jaguar's done a great job with the interior as well - intimate, beautifully detailed, it just makes you want to get in and drive. Emphasising this point, there's a choice of two engines and three power outputs, and every single F-Type comes fitted with a supercharger.

What's not?
Errrrrr... actually we're properly struggling. Some potential buyers might be put off by the fabric roof, we suppose, when some rivals have folding hard tops. But this helps keep down weight, complexity and cost - so no complaints from us. It's also auto only, but comes with an eight-speed 'box.

How much and when?
Jaguar is just putting the finishing touches on the chassis set-up and handling, so we can expect to see the F-Type reach dealerships in mid-2013. Prices will start from £58,500 for the 340hp V6 car, £67,500 for the 375hp F-Type S and £79,950 for the F-Type V8 S.

Anything else I should know?
Engine choices comprise of two variants of a new 3.0-litre supercharged V6 offering 340hp and 380hp, plus a reworked version of Jaguar's existing 5.0-litre supercharged V8 good for 500hp. With the V8, the F-Type will hit 60mph in 4.2 seconds and go on to 186mph. To keep fuel consumption and emissions down, all versions are fitted with stop-start: the V6 can average up to 31.4mpg.
