chargeing young drivers an average of £4000 per year is ok..provided that they get a large sum of this back at the end of an claim or accident free year of driving. insurance companys are just a rip off...goverment ought to crack down on these robbing gits.

Insurance companies base their premiums on claims made according to age, gender, geographical locations etc....or so they say..

These grounds are all well and good, but it seems a little unfair, to penalize drivers purely on age, as there are some very good young drivers...as there are, poor 'older' drivers....but to financially cripple a young driver BEFORE they even get into the car, seems pretty presumptuous on the insurance companies.

By definition, we are not paying for insurance, as we are not paying for something in the event that it is definitely going to happen...but are paying for assurance...which assures us that 'compensation' will be paid out if something does happen....So it is the motorist carrying all the risk...and is paying for something, which may never happen.....and is therefore, not cost effective, regardless of all the 'whistles and bells' offers and inducements (including 'no claims').

Why can't everyone pay a flat basic premium of £50 per year......and subject these policies to a compulsory excess according to age.....decreasing as their driving career progresses...as well as age of course. Then, good young drivers will not be penalised, any more than a 'mature' driver.It will also act as an incentive to build up a good driving record. This minimum flat rate will also benefit the maturer driver, as their premiums could be lower than they are currently paying also, because I don't know of any driver.....even with decades of impeccable driving, who pays a double figure annual premium...and sees anything for their financial outlay.

The only 'drawback' is the reduced revenue for the insurance companies (from upfront premiums), who will not be able to throw our premiums on lavish advertising campaigns...BUT they wouldn't need to, as people will be flooding through their doors anyway, with the competitive rates offered.

im 18 and i am struggling to insure a 1.2 renault clio, goverment seriously need to stop taking the **** and charging young drivers like £4000 a year for insurance!

im 17 and im the main driver fully comprehensive the only other driver on the policy has had crashes in the past 3 years however on a mitsubishi l200 pickup a 2.5 turbo i got insurance with aviva for just £1600 of course the cheapest quote i got on confused.com was £2500 and its the same with all other pickups as they are classed as commercial vehicles and are also seen to be safer in crashes

You sort of forgot Land Rovers!! You can get insured on a Commercial 4X4 for as little as £900 on Aviva private van insurance! Get your self a commercial Landy or try out other 4x4's on the quote generator and get on the roads in a 2.5 litre beast xD

As an 18 year old lad who needs a car, I have some of my own suggestions to add. Firstly, I once got a quote for about £1800 on an old land rover discovery 2.5 litre (someone's already mentioned that one!). As well as that, the Skoda Fabia is the cheapest I have ever seen, coming in at £1600. It has to be between something like 03 - 08 plate, but you can have a hatchback or estate version of the 1.4 litre model. Crazy.

I've never had a crash, never made a claim, yea I've had my foot down many times but if you tell me you've never done over 80 on the A1 I will call you a liar lol as an additive I passed both my theory and practical first time with 1 minor fault (apparently being stuck behind an RAC Breakdown van in Durham city center during rush hour is a bad thing.... it might of broke down and I might not have been able to move..... in a traffic jam)

Anyway, I'm 22 year old, gained my license when I was 17 and I own a 1995 Toyota Celica GT-Four, fair enough its an insurance group 15 Japanese import with modifications but why should my premium be £1,400 fully comp with only 20,000 miles???

The main chip on my shoulder is occupation, I'm a herpetologist, is a doctor a better driver than me? is an elderly, retired man who lives in Glasgow a more efficient and capable driver than a 25 year old fork lift driver from Leeds with sharper reactions, better judgement and a much more keener eye sight?

Why should my insurance be effected by others? If that is the case, here's a message to all UK metropolitan police officers, if a 22 year old stabs somebody in London.... blame me.... here in Durham, because it has absolutely nothing to do with me.... but blame me anyway....

I'm deeply sorry for my language The DSA, DVLA and European Insurance Federation need to **** off and find a doctor to remove their heads from each others arses.

If I get stupid quotes, god help 17-18 and even 18 year olds.

Anyone knows that the cheapest cars to insure are small hatchbacks with small engines. You neglected to mention the fact that if you get a hatchback with the back windows blocked out its classified as a van and you a can commercial insurance which is far cheaper. All this article does is state the obvious without giving any smart tips.

Landrover 88, 109 and most defenders are THE cheapest vehicles to insure for youg people! I was paying £1700 for a 2005 vauxhall astra 1.7cdti then switched to a 2.2diesel Landy 109. My insurance??? That went down t0 £220. This is FACT!!!!

Mines is a P reg Punto sx. 41,000 on the clock ,no power steering, but drives like a ....erm....car!

Body work is perfect. Interior is as original! .It`s a lump of metal! A-B and back. No problems.

All of those quotes seem way too high. I ensured a pugeot 306 forr under 700 quid when i was that age in 2003. Glad that we are no longer penalised for being men, but it should have ffected both genders quotes with a fall in mens prices and an increase in womens prices rather than just a rise in female's quotes. Being an insurer is like having a lience to print money. I recently got hit by a landrover pulling out of a side road onto my right while riding my motorcycle. It feels like I being forced into a 50/50 offer because its 'less expensive for the insurer' when the other party was in the wrong.

I can vouch for the classic Mini being a great deal for new drivers, I bought one for £1000 and insured it for £832 at 18. They're really brilliant fun to drive too, light weight, good on fuel and easy to work on with a few spanners.
