Sometimes we all need to let off a little steam - here's what happens when carmakers tear up the rulebook and build themselves something just a little bit special. From W12-powered Golfs to GT-R powered Jukes, this is our kind of madness...

The madder the better as far as I'm concerned. Cars should have character and attitude. Too many are just boring clones of each other. It's not that often that you see something truely eyecatching for all the right reasons. A lot of the dullness these days is surely down to the greedy insurance companies who love to cripple most people financially but moreso for anyone who dares to own something out of the ordinary.

Strange little men in their sheds and garages create some wierd and wonderful things. You can't always rely on the big companies to do the right thing when it comes to pioneering technology (Unless there are big profits to be made). Politcs seems to hold progress back but strange little men in their sheds and garages can do as they wish without restraint. God bless strange little men in their sheds and garages. The mind boggles at what maniac machines have been created in sheds and garages but have never been unveiled to the masses.

The M1 was opened in November 1959. The 70mph limit was introduced in 1965. Midland Red ran coaches with a top speed of 100 mph.Standerwicks ran double deckers with reclining seats, toilets and a hostess, but they were limited to 64mph. It must have been a bit hairy top deck front seats.

Introduction of 70 mph speed limit on M1. December 1965. The reason given was a spate of serious accidents in foggy conditions, but it is often claimed that the Ministry of Transport

had been alarmed by AC Cars testing their latest Cobra on the M1 at speeds up to 180 mph.  You pays yer money. You sticks the blame on whoever you fancy.

I can remember from my younger days there being a regular around the British motor racing scene a chap called Chris Craft who used to race some weird combination vehicles, including a Mk.1 Transit and a Mini both I believe V8 powered. I heard the Mini had the engine where the back seat should have been and the gearbox and diff. under the bonnet (so it was still front wheel drive.

I never actually saw him race, I gather he raced in F3, F3000 and at Le Mans during his career. I often wonder if the V8 was the part saved after smashing up one of his machines and put in the second

I've been lucky enough to have had a test run around silverstone in the transit van and its bloody fantastic, 0-100 in 3.6 and a top speed of 186mph if i remember right, its got an F1 ford cosworth engine in it and sounds fantastic. haven't seen one since 1999 so don't know if there's any still out there, god i hope so.

but the renault supervan did out do the ford, but only just, i could have stood there and heard them  both all day long, just wish there were a few more and maybe even a race series for them. I would pay money to watch them again...

If I remember rightly, of the 2 Super Snakes made, only 1 still exists. The other was crashed.

Love the W12 Golf though :D

It was Aston Martin actually not Jags ...After being built at the old Newport Pagnell site the MI became the natural test track ..........until a Ford Zephyr Police Car clocked a DB6 doing 120 mph in 1966 and some miserable old fart in Whitehall said enough was enough hence the 70 mph limit

Before there was a speed limit on the M1 it was rumoured that Lotus built a mobile test bed consisting of a Ford Thames 5 or 7cwt van with a formula 1 engine in the back driving the rear wheels. The rumour went on to describe Jag owners doing the ton going all 'brown trousered ' when this machine blasted past them driven by Jim Clark. At the same time students at what was then Loughborough College of technology were supposed to have put some really hairy engine in a Messerschmitt bubble car. The driver sat on a saddle on top of the reverse mounted gearbox. I've always(?) wanted to know if either story was true.

I always thought the 70 mph speed limit was introduced because Jaguar were testing thier race cars on the M1. Please correct me if that is wrong.
