The Ford Transit is the nation's favourite van, powering brickies, plumbers, sparks and the occasional getaway driver for nearly 50 years. Ford has just released details of an all-new Transit, which promises even better driving dynamics and economy. In celebration of a new era of the people's van, we take a look at some of the more weird and wacky variations.

The original Transit is a design classic and still looks good. My father had one in his youth, he says. It took him and others to all sorts of places. Along shady lanes, down dead ends, to faraway gigs and Santa Pod Raceway; where he smuglled three of his mates in under a tarpaulin stretched across a luggage carrier specially installed on the roof for the task.

It seems that my father was a bit of a lad. A racy boy perhaps.

Hey-ho.

I'vedriven a lot of different low & mid-price range vehicles (both cars and vans) and the Transit was by far the most comfortable

Looks like a copy of a Renault Trafic! Ford Transit only started to have this so called top van mantle since 1988 when GM decided wrongly to drop Bedford vans, the CA & CF had been the top van for years. If anyone can recall they had those awful Ford Thames vans prior to the Transit range and you can no longer get the Ford car derived vans ..........
