What a rediculous article, so far removed from reality along with the incredible rip-off's being charged by car insurance companies. The only thing this article highlights is the fact car insurance companies are robbing people and legislation needs to be put in place to control them.

Yet another  stupid msn article, What 17-19 year old student can afford to buy and run a car????
Insurance, Road tax & fuel. Then student fee's, Accommodation & food and just living expenses.

Unless your mummy a daddy pays and your a snotty public school kid...........Live in the real world MSN reporters.........

All these cars are **** concetrate on your studies and get good grades rather than taking a loan out to pay for a car and when you get a good job then you can buy a car cash rather than paying a load of interest the banks or money lenders have enough money without giving the bastards more

I would just like to add that my son also paid £3000.00 for insurance on a 7 year old Clio.

I would also like to know where these quotes have come from, absolutely ridiculous.

Why should they be penalised when there are thousands of un-insured drivers on the roads!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah. Just check you can park on campus before you buy or bring a car to uni with you, as in most places parking is very restricted and you won't be able to get a permit unless you're living miles away.
avatar
How will they travel to campus and back? Get a bus or walk and don't be so bloody middle class.

I have just bought this for my Son he is 17 years old and i have had to pay £2200 for his insurance  ..  that was the cheapest to insure .. it is a joke how expensive it is to insure young drivers

I would like to know where do you get these quotes from.

No wonder young people are not learning to drive.

To clarify, I was referring to the Daewoo/ Chevrolet Matiz. i have driven may vehicles and I can't think of a worse car than this, no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Pandas are fun though...

OK this is with Young women in mind, what about the young men who want to drive!!

im a 38 year old man who has had to sell his car because the costs of insurance, road tax, fuel, and the like are just far too much to cope with, My car was a very old 'H' Reg VW Polo i found on gumtree, after 5 years of fun motoring my little baby had to go.

i had full no claims which i had protected and i was still getting quotes between £700 to £2500

You cannot recommend this car for students,or anyone else actually. Underpowered, tinny, pedals so offset you end up hitting the brrake when you want to change gear. Only suitable for someone who actively dislikes driving and wants those feelings vindicated.

yeah right buy a lupo they were only made for 3 years and have lot of faults one being the peddle box that is sub standard and built really badly and snaps off where the clutch peddle is attached and is a real pain to replace and its really uncomfortable to drive for any length of time probably the worst car vw have ever made and i've had alot of vw's but that said it looks ok  with a drop of 20mm and a set of 15"-16" rims

A scan of the feedback shows that your readers are closer to the REAL world of motoring economics than your "contributor".

Most students who have cars also have doting parents who cover their costs, and then some... (Perhaps "doting" is the wrong word: "dotage" seems more relevant to their mentalities.) Anyway, as long as somebody else is paying and there's no come-back, any self-respecting person - student or otherwise - will take the money and run.

Young people (and their parents) need a healthy injection of common sense and determination regarding travel to, at and from their colleges. Most student accommodation is within walking distance of the campusses, and those that are further away are often served by buses. A bicycle is cheaper than buses and faster than walking. Student railcards discount their train fares (bicycles are carried free on off-peak trains). So why would any able-bodied student NEED a car?
