Great, cheap cars for students
Across Britain millions of students are gearing up to begin their studies. But how will they travel to campus and back? We scoured the used market for the 20 best used student cars that won't break the bank. Split into four price ranges - under £1,000, under £3,000, under £5,000 and under £8,000 - there is something in this selection for everybody.
To select the featured models we relied heavily on the help of the lads at CAP and mycarcheck.com, both premier providers of used vehicle data. Our selection criteria? To pick 20 cars that strike the best balance between running costs, fuel economy, safety, reliability, low running costs and, last but not least, street cred.
That shortlist was then further whittled down by feeding it through the gocompare.com database for an indication of the insurance premium a 19 year old female student could expect to pay. This list is the result. And although the inevitable Fords, Vauxhall and VWs do make an appearance, there are more than a few lesser known models along the way.

OK this is with Young women in mind, what about the young men who want to drive!!
im a 38 year old man who has had to sell his car because the costs of insurance, road tax, fuel, and the like are just far too much to cope with, My car was a very old 'H' Reg VW Polo i found on gumtree, after 5 years of fun motoring my little baby had to go.
i had full no claims which i had protected and i was still getting quotes between £700 to £2500
A scan of the feedback shows that your readers are closer to the REAL world of motoring economics than your "contributor".
Most students who have cars also have doting parents who cover their costs, and then some... (Perhaps "doting" is the wrong word: "dotage" seems more relevant to their mentalities.) Anyway, as long as somebody else is paying and there's no come-back, any self-respecting person - student or otherwise - will take the money and run.
Young people (and their parents) need a healthy injection of common sense and determination regarding travel to, at and from their colleges. Most student accommodation is within walking distance of the campusses, and those that are further away are often served by buses. A bicycle is cheaper than buses and faster than walking. Student railcards discount their train fares (bicycles are carried free on off-peak trains). So why would any able-bodied student NEED a car?
