Well, so much for the summer sun - but we've got just the cure for this wet weather depression. Yep, buy yourself a new car. A fun one. You don't need to spend much. In fact, the way used car prices are at the moment, less than £2,000 will do. Here's our list of ten top choices for some budget automotive entertainment.

Forget your Golf GTI and Peugeot 205s, the original Renault Clio Renaultsport is now the ultimate affordable hot hatch. Both 172 and 182 generations are available in this budget, and in terms of £s per grin they're tough to beat. Look for accident and suspension damage, as they're firm track day favourites.

Find a Renaultsport Clio 172 for less than £2k on Auto Trader

The Fiat coupe 20valve Turbo is an awesome car but you will have to have a rainy day account of at least 5k. 7k all in for a car that does 0-60 in 6 seconds and is a member of the 155mph Club is money well spent.

There are only 48 Turbo LE's left and only 1499 Turbo 20valve Turbo's left. A future classic is a possibility as people not prepared to keep them going but try before you criticise honestly the car will impress you but maybe not your wallet but it will be money well spent.

I am on my third now and they are becoming so rare the younger generation don't even know what they are. I have had a 911 Targa 3.2 a couple of Boxters and this still gives me a lot of pleasure to push the 220bhp to the front wheels.

I had one when they first came out, and drove all the way from Manchester to Malta and back, if I am not mistaking it was powered by a 1.8 turbo charged engine with a top spead of 140mph, and i can confirm that it did reach that speed on the Autostrada's....!

182 is one of the best on here. 6.9 0-60 ontop of extremely nimble and agile handling. Top motor.

The fiat coupe 20v turbo

I bought mine for under 600 pounds with full sevice history one or two car park dings but what do you expect for that price quite a few minor enginr mods and even more bhp for a few quid I love it.

These cars are such fun and will upset 99% of how shall I say , oh look at me in my new B M W or Subaru owners etc who have spent thousands and then get upstaged my a old fiat ha ha ha

but if you have not been in one then you will never know what you are missing

A couple of reasonable cars but most are a bit "girly" . But where does the awful  Volvo V 70 fit into the fun section ?  Even the police stopped using them as most of the big Volvo estates were deadly at speed  .

It wasnt a Yamaha engine..they helped design it... Zetec SE with VVT... Brilliant little car tho.. Puma racing just a bit faster but not much... Arguably best handling FWD ever ??? If you havent driven one have a go...perectly neutral in a FWD ???? Amazing ... Seen them hang onto Elises round twisty bits on track days and they still use them for training drivers on Anglesy

For a proper driving experience for not much money and I can vouch for this because did a track day in one a while ago, try a Proton Satria GTI. Nothing on this this list comes close. Not the quickest car and maybe not to everyones taste but so alert and responsive  Ford, Renault, Alfa Romeo and the rest should Drive one to understand how a hot hatch should drive. Truely under-rated car.

why on earth did a fiat end up on the list, the cars are rubbish and i have owned a coupe and that was crap to. The best car for under 2k is a saab 9-3 aero 53 plate, theres a few about. What a monster this car is!!! Kicks the crap out off all the little ball bags in focus st's with less power. What a car.
