Knowledge, so the saying goes, is power. And when you can't phone a friend it's great to have the help you need sitting on an app on your smartphone. Millions of apps are now available and not just for the iPhone. Nokia's Ovi Store, WindowsPhone.com and BlackBerry's App World all provide apps. Here are some of the bestones for motorists.

App: Confused.com MotorMate

Insurance comparison site Confused.com has launched an app that can rate your driving. MotorMate, which is free to download and use, allows your mobile phone to monitor your driving style with rewards for good driving, such as a £25 cashback voucher and a free in-car cradle. We're testing the app and will report back on our progress once we have achieved the recommended 250 miles. Ian Dickson

Available via: iPhone, Android. Free

Seriously bad reporting as you mention the iPhone, BlackBerry and the virtually non existent Nokia and Windows phones all have stores yet you don't mention Android and its store whilst Android is the dominant mobile OS based by market share. Biased much? They all have offerings and are all more or less the same as most devs make apps for most platforms if there is a demand for them.

"It's great in cars where your driving position makes it difficult to see the speedometer"

What? How many cars are designed where the driver CAN'T see the speedometer?

to be honest im a biker as well as a motorist and i would just like to say very politely STOP USING YOUR BLOODY PHONE WHEN DRIVING !  unless its in a proper cradle like a proper SAT NAV its no good looking at the passenger seat for directions you will be crying when they take your licence for manslaughter .......not everyone obviosly some people are sensibly its just the odd FEW MILLION

Top apps for motorists huh?

How about "Waze"? Free SatNav (Android and iPhone if not more), plus live traffic jams (think of TomTom's Live service) and they're bringing in fuel prices so no need for that Gas Station app which costs money.

How about Vlingo for Android. Free. Makes it easy / safer to use phone while driving. Can use voice commands, dictate messages and it can read out texts.

The RAC app you list for Windows Phone only, well I have it on my Android, how did I manage that then?

Waze! Why isn't everyone using Waze?

Free and available on all Android units (and other Smart phones)

Apple iGadget users will be far too busy using irrelevant life wasting apps.

All these apps sound and look pretty cool and useful, but can you please not give all them to the sodding i-phones and making out Apple is the greatest brand ever for these features, there are other phones that can have these features as well so please consider the other brands of mobile phones and let them have the lime light as well sorry if I sound harsh lol.
