The world's strangest car parks

Car parks aren't usually a top priority for architects. They often consist of no more than some tar slapped onto a flat surface and dissected with white lines or, at the most, a bleak multi-storey maze of concrete pillars.

But as the demands of drivers and cities change, putting ever more pressure on both the designer and their resources, the humble car park has had to step up. The 10 parking garages assembled here all have a fresh take on a staid concept and run the whole gamut from the brilliant to the downright weird. Don't forget to tell us your favourite in the comments section below.

I agree with Brian Harle.  Seems a shame to demolish such an iconic car park.  Especially since they're replacing it with yet another Tesco.

Still think the "Get Carter" car park in Gateshead was one of the best car parks ever built. Designed by Owen Luder..Now sadly demolished

it's nice to see something built, which isn't just built to a price, but to do it's job and be beautiful/interesting for a change. So many buildings are built as cheaply as possible just to stop people moaning about it being a waste of money and that the money 'could have been used for schools or hospitals'  These people must have no pride in their surroundings.

it would be brilliant if all car parks were automated, drive your car on to a skid and its gone. return present your ticket / pay and your car is back no door dents or some idiot has backed into ? load up and go. i believe they have them in Tokyo. that would be a brilliant car park.

Parking a car is a scientific process which involves the skill of the operator and the creativeness of the car park designer. All in favour say I.Smile

My company make these smart towers but now they have progressed to newer designs holding up to 88 cars of all types and sizes in a huge glass octaginal shaped tower. The lift in the centre is so fast that it really just takes minutes to retrieve your parked car.

You insert your ticket at an entrance and immediately the central lift moves up to a sliding pallet holding your car. It brings this down and the doors open to allow you to get in and drive away. The empty pallet then waits for a new customer.

It is practical for using such a small space for parking so many cars and I imagine in a city centre it would be the ideal solution especially where space is so expensive to build on.

They already have these in Moscow and I am sure there is a video on line where you can see it working.

The Autostadt Car Towers in Wolfsburg is my favorite from a pure design standpoint, but the Kansas City Public Library parking garage comes in as second based on the exterior art and function motif.

Smart towers work via a central lift....the car is driven in, the driver gets out then progams which position to put the car into....the lift then operates, rotating the car to the correct position, drops the car off then returns to the ground floor position. Recovering a car, works the same, they just programe the lift with which space they want to retrieve car from and it picks the car up returning it to the ground & rotating it to drive straight out!
