My advice is make sure the new car you are about to buy is the one you want to keep for ten years or more and don't worry about depreciation. As long as it goes who cares.

I'm not sure why there are any 'thumbs down ' for anyone who wants to buy a decent used car thus saving  themselves a shed-load of  money, which disappears the moment you drive off the forecourt if you buy a new one.

To be fair to Vauxhall, the examples you've shown are 2009 models Astra & Zafira. Since then Vauxhall have brought out new models in both hence the bigger drop in value over 3 years. Vauxhall's generally tend to keep their value very well, but this article doesn't seem to represent that unfortunately. Also the pictures shown are new model Astra & Zafira, not the 2009 models which are being talked about. Poor article in my opinion which contains false information.

bought a new car once lost so much on it wont do that again i have a 1997 toyota starlet to run me around paid £750.00 for it 69000 miles on the clock, only needs a cd player and i love it  first M.O.T sailed through just new tyre and a wheel bearing.... much less than new car cost to M.O.T that cost me thousand and a bit more and when people overtake me i laugh coz i catch them up at the next roundabout/ traffic lights hehe!!.

depreciation on a new car is so big as soon as you drive it down the road from the dealer you may as well just throw a few thousand out the window .

What a terrible article. In most cases MSN are quoting the used value for models that have since been replaced. Honestly, try and find a new shape BMW 5 Series or Jag XJ for the prices they are talking about !!!! Landrover Freelanders have dropped loads because the Evoque, need I go on?

Im not sure why the thumbs down on second hand cars, I am getting a 3 year old astra estate, top of the range with 14k miles on clock, 12 months mot for £6000 lol at paying over £20 k new for one. And as I will pay cash I will twist the arm for a discount of the dealer, if the garage cant go down in price they usually come up with another incentive like a couple of years warranty or a couple of services.
I can understand people thumbs down if all of us were on about £100 bangers held together with string. And I will admit over the years I have seen some rubbish cars at high prices, but if you know about cars, have a pal who does, or even get the aa or rac to inspect it, you can get a bargain that will last you years.

You've missed Aston Martin - mine has depreciated by 55% in 2 years - I feel sick

There is something nobody ever mentioned, as soon as you buy your new car and want to sell it VAT comes off. So there's a hefty drop in value for a start. Unless you can recover VAT somehow.
My rule: buy used guaranteed cars, you get all the bells and whistles with depreciation already factored in.
I managed to keep buying low mileage good cars for very little over the last 7 or 8 years, they were depreciated for a start so I would NEVER buy a new car. I only did that when it was a company car

Went straight to Autotrader to buy a Jag XJ when i saw this price.....not a single one of this shape anywhere near. The old model is pulling in more. Got your info wrong MSN i think.

I gave up buying new cars years ago, We are quite happy buying cars 3 to 5 years old and keeping them till it costs more than the cars worth to go through the mot.

Yes - these are the cars to buy if you want a decent buy for longer term ownership.

I'm on my second Jaguar = low mileage, bought for nought, still going strong. Current S type only worth a few grand but parts are usually cheap...yes cheap, sure I have a few  niggles as you would with any car, there is always one bill that I can't avoid every two years. But super car performance from this V8? Luxury? Superb. Too good to replace.

Magic.

You can do it too...

Buy new look after it and sell when it starts to give you trouble

that is what i do I never worry about depreciation because i make sure i have had my moneys worth before i sell the car privately i never part ex as the garage then makes profit out of the car they are buying off me (thieving I really mean) and the car i buy off them.

my best advice is haggle until you are nearly thrown out of the showroom then go home and have a cuppa they will ring you up when business is slow and offer you the deal you were after.

I'd love to buy a new car, but then i'd keep it for a long time, the numberplate doesn't mean anything to me. I'd buy a new car to have it the way I wanted, I don't see the point of buying a 6 month old car and settle for what other people chose, if you want to be 'smart' and not fork out money buy an old micra, you'll save a fortune, and when it goes wrong it'll be dirt cheap to fix compared to newer cars.

I currently drive a 7 year old car that i've owned for the past 4 years, its worthless to sell, but its got 160k on it, still drives like new (recently replaced suspension, nothing wrong with the old but was getting a bit bouncy), and i'd say in better condition that most newer cars as I replace things as they get worn.

I still pay for servicing, theres so many people with a year old car who ignore the service light and various problems, who just ruin their cars because they forked out all the cash on looking rich with their shiny car and can't afford to run it.

If you can find me new shape 2009 Jaguar XJ's for £16000 I will buy them all... You still pay that for old shape cars.

'Renaults aren't renowned for reliability or build quality'

Must be why I had a 2001 megane and in 4 years had no mechanical faults or problems let alone have FSH which shows it had none. I know many renaults that havn't had problems.

Kisu you'll find VW own skoda not GM. And the way GM used and abused SAAB that brought about their sad demise, its no wonder that GM cars are just totally crap and made up of the same parts.
