I once had a MK2 escort 2 door in british racing green the previous owner had fitted a lotus engine bored out to 1850cc and  done a fair bit to the suspension brakes and the engine including fitting twin carbs so it was pretty nippy but the back end was so light that the power could not be used even though it had wide wheels spacers and wide arches in fact i sometimes carried a bag of sand in the boot to gain traction in the wet (no i did not throw the sand on the road)

the steering and brakes were fine but it would power slide at the merest hint of throttle

But that was nothing compared to the car  my mate lent me for the weekend He built a lada Riva and fitted a 2 litre  twin over head cam fiat 131 super mira fiorie abarth engine in it he then worked on the engine until it did about 7mpg so it was a bit quick The brakes and suspension were bog standard lada so stopping cornering and handling were frightening (I had grey hair when i handed it back) The things you do when you are a kid

it makes you wonder how you managed to become an adult (i say become an adult because petrol heads never grow up their toys just get better )  : )

Once had a Ford Escort Mk 1 with a BRM racing engine in - didn't keep it long as felt dangerous on the public highway!

1967 105E Ford Anglia Estate with a "worked on" 2 litre Cortina engine and a 1.6 Capri back axle. Don't ask why, coz I can't remember now as this was back in 1977. I think it was just a case of when the Angle-box's engine went, I decided, along with a few mates to see what we could do with it! Well, I would love to say that it was an unqualified success, but I think we all know that's not going to happen. The car went like a rocket up to 65(ish) mph, but at that point all the gearing and drive ratios decided they didn't want to work in harmony any more, and the car just ran out of steam. This was probably just as well, as it still had its original brakes. Fantastic for beating other cars off from the lights, but absolutely hateful for driving anywhere in as it was just too much hard work to drive - and bloody noisy as well. I kept it for about 3 months after its "conversion" but couldn't live with it any longer. The last time I heard of it was in late 1979, and it had gone through about a dozen owners in the intervening 2 years or so.
