Vauxhall is about to unleash its all-new Astra VXR. And with it, it will push the boundaries of front-wheel drive with no less than 280hp going through the front tyres. But that's not even beginning to push the boundaries. Here are 10 front-wheel drive cars that match or beat that 280hp power rush. We're only including production cars in this line-up, but if we included tuners the records would tumble.

As long ago as 2006, Vauxhall had a front-wheel drive machine with 280hp, at the time the Vectra VXR being Vauxhall's most powerful-ever FWD car. Its 2.8-litre V6 engine made it so amusing that Vauxhall decided it would put a stop to it all: the current Insgnia switches to four-wheel drive in its most powerful incarnations.
