Nick Love's remake of cult '70s TV cop show The Sweeney hits the big screen this week, with Ray Winstone in the starring role as Flying Squad detective, Jack Regan. We can't think of a better excuse for a gun-waving, cockney-rhyming horsepower-fest.

Fast cars have always played a starring role in The Sweeney and the film's obligatory chase sequences feature the new Ford Focus ST, which goes on sale this month - and the blistering Jaguar XFR. So read on for a butcher's at the some of the Sweeney's most recognisable jam jars...

Ah, those were the days...I had...a Carmen Red 3.8S, all wood and Connolly leather, on chrome wires, with Webasto roof. Went to Brands one day as a member of the owners club, came back as a pedestrian. A German and a Dutch guy were outbidding each other to buy it! The Dutch guy won. He kept in touch for years, and it was still running in '92, when he died. Lovely car, but couldn't run her today - 16mpg....maybe!

Re-make the Sweeney? Not possible without John and Dennis. So, Nick Love my son, you're nicked!

I actually owned the Bronze Consul 3.0 V6 Sweeney car for three months back in 1982. It had less than 25,000 miles on clock  and with its manual gearbox, it went very well indeed, for the day. The old 3.0 litre Ford V6 was all about torque, not horsepower, ( it was only around 130 bhp if i remember correctly ) so it pulled very well from low revs, but did run out of power above 5000 revs. It was a big old beast though, but you could chuck it around into corners and let the torque push you out of fast corners. Of course these days, most cars would blow it away in terms of speed and handling, but it did have a character to it that many cars seems to have lost these days and the burble from the engine, whilst no Alfa V6, was very meaty indeed. I would love to know where NHK 295M is now.

'72 (I think) Consul 3.0ltr GT in red with full Webasto roof, Wolfefrace slots, James Hunt shades, Cafe Creme cigars, Jason King hair and a frill-fronted dress shirt undone down to the waist so that the medallion was in full view.... Oh!.... And don't forget the brand new Sinclaire digital l.e.d. watch (which only displayed the time when you pressed the button and needed a new battery every two weeks!)

Seen some great Granada's getting totalled on the Banger Racing scene. Killed about 10 myself as they make great DD cars.

MSN strike again, it was a Granada, not a Consul GT as the car being used was a 6 cylinder, not the 4 cylinder.  I had an Escort mk 2 RS which was originally part of the Browns garage team - BDG engine fabulous car, great for upsetting the local sports car owners - particularly the Porsche guys!

Looking at the stills above it really does not look the same, you could NEVER imagine John Thaw and Dennis Waterman in an Escort!

Agree, Got the T Shirt along with those who espouse the classic car. But to be fair, Ray Winstone is an excellent choice to play Regan, a few years down the line; he has the definite essence.  After all, none of us can percieve exactly how the character would evolve had the Sweeney continued and Regan/John Thaw, continued in it.

New cars dont cut it, however the older cars had a tendency to fold in half if you hit a paper bag at speed, and you certainly didnt need a round about to go round in circles, you could do that by driving over a garden slug at 5mph. Takes me back to the days of the Dunlop Denovo run flat tyre and the Goodyear Grand Prix S, combine them with a set of chromey bezlogs and you was ready to drive home like a boss from the pub after 15 pints with a party seven rolling about with the kids in the footwell.

I look forward to seeing the film, just dusting down my Pork Pie hat, Crombie and Loafers ready for the weekend.
