The worst form of distraction for a driver isn’t yapping on their phone or replying to a text message apparently, but munching on a Big Mac or taking a swig of coffee.

Research carried out by the USA’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed that those who eat and drive increase the odds of an accident by 80% and are involved in the majority of near-miss accidents.

In fact, the health-and-safety conscious NHTSA even went so far as to list the 10 most dangerous foods and drinks for a driver. Here they are – the foods that might be more than just a killer for your waistline.

Click on the image above to discover the 10 most lethal foods to eat while driving, in ascending order of dangerousness...

You see this regularly on UK roads as well especially when the idiots are late for work and think it's acceptable to eat their breakfast behind the wheel.  And, watch where their rubbish goes as well.

come on MSN, why publish "The 10 most dangerous foods to eat behind the wheel" on the UK web site, when research has been  carried out by the USA’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. I put it to you now that a Branston pickle laden sandwich is more dangerous in the UK than both BBQ food and Chilli put together!!!

and my pet hate seeing programs like Country file, Grand Designs and many others where they drive along talking to the veiwers or passengers.  They often even let go of the steering wheel to talk with their hands.  They should all be done for driving without due care and attention.  Don't tell me it's staged - that is no excuse and it should not be shown.  Horse riders could be just around that corner when they are talking to the camera  Ban it now.

USA only, non of this is allowed in the UK, can be charged with careless driving. Goes to show why we see so many multiple pile ups on Yankee freeways, high speed and not concentrating. Most Yankee drivers think automatic, means what it says literally!

The most dangerous food to eat while driving I would say is a BBQ rack of Tyranosourous ribs as it would require two hands to hold it therefore no hands on the steering wheel

Instead of wasting Billions doing research no one actually cares about, how about just introducing a Law that bans it ..

the only thing you should do in a car is drive and concentrate on the road. no eating, no putting make up on. no nothing.  even the radio and stereo should not have any controls on them that are not on the steering column. anything that takes your mind off what your doing. even having kids in the car they talk to you directly and don't understand when they are asking you to look that its dangerous.

you only have to take your mind off the road for a split second and you can crash.

its okay saying you can eat and drink but they all have to be opened or got out of another container which means looking down. basically if your hungry stop the car. stop the car if you want to do something else, listening to music is fine but if you have to look down to the stereo or reach to change cd or now days look at your ipod they are all dangerous and then you are a danger to others that might not be doing anything wrong. the only trouble is policing it. I get sick of seeing people on there phones in cars. don't answer it. so policing eating and drinking will be on the same scale.

this is my opinion, I know sometimes you might want something really trivial but if the temptation is removed. maybe the car companies should make the driver side enclosed like a bus or coach driver so you cant interact with them. other people might think its silly or maybe you have to set everything before you move off, its okay building the cars to withstand impact but maybe by taking away temptation to not concentrate in the first place might be more preventative than any air bag ever could be.
