TVR has left in its wake a long string of prototypes that never made production. But none was as outrageous as the 1997 Cerbera Speed 12. Built to be the fastest car in the world, TVR targeted a top speed of 240mph and 0-60mph in 2.9 seconds by using a monstrous 1,000bhp 7.7-litre V12 engine.

Then TVR boss Peter Wheeler scared himself silly in the prototype (he declared it "undriveable"). He canned the project and returned deposits paid by eager customers.
