There’s a new supercar on the block and at £2.2m it can claim to be the most expensive car in the world. More amazing still, it’s made in that hotbed of automotive innovation – Lebanon.

This slightly strange news got us thinking. If every country on the planet could put forward its one top contender into a World Cup of the planet’s greatest cars, which model would take home the trophy?

It hasn't been easy but we've put our heads together and picked the greatest car from each major car-building nation and quite a few minor ones too. In theory, they've all got an equal chance of impressing. In reality, it's a mix of bona fide classics, exotic rarities and obscure no-hopers. Which one gets your vote?

And how about the Toyota Landcruiser - the UN couldn't get about without it and it's 60 years old this year. Might not be the fastest or the sexiest looking but gets the job done.

To kick the Trabbie is unfair. Its maker and engineers worked with material supply restrictions which would certainly have finished off most Western manufacturers.  It worked after a fashion and provided third world standards for what was at the time a third world country.

What about Wales...who can forget the Gilbern?  You lot, obviously!  And Scotland...the Argyll, although it ceased manufacturing in the 1930s.

What about the Reliant Robin, a non rust plastic body, cheap tax and insurance, and very economical, so good for the environment.

And one that 99% of the population could have afforded when in production.

As against these super cars that are effectively only for the 1% of the population "Bankers,Industrialists etc"

The monteverdi has to close a resemblance to the Jensen Interceptor, somebody has been copying somewhere down the line.

Skoda Superb a big surprise to be included, own one, absolutely brilliant family motor 100% reliable, have very tall family but everyone has plenty of room.

Jag E type stunning motor.

Surely the DMC Deloreon is a much better representative for the Ireland entry.

the DMC Deloreon would have made a good entry for Ireland if it was actually from Ireland.....

rubbish. as per. marauder... firstly, not a car. if its as big as a truck and with a truck engine and you have to climb up into it, like you would a truck, its a bloody truck. would it have been too hard to dig a little further and pick the shelby superperformance coupe, a car, made by a south african company?

e-type, sexiest, for many yes. great.... possibly. greater than the F1 or the mini, really not sure.

sometimes it looks like you just typed in "cars by country" into wikipedia and went from there.

in another article on reborn brands its mentioned lack of sports cars and makers in france aside from gordini (who was a tuner anyway) thus completely forgetting alpine, venturi and of course bugatti in the process. i mean, how many makers should a country of frances' manafacturing size have???

this french link brings me onto my final point. the ds, amazing car, utterly stunning looks and adventurous technology, some of which actuallly worked but what vision. greater than a veyron?

another slap-dash msn production

ps.

dont you watch top gear? the sapphire cosworth was made in belgium.
